Our first attempt was abortive and left us negotiating narrow, old, roads in the town centre.
The second was eventually successful, after another false start, and we found the road, named Goggs Mill Road. A short way along it, over a bridge to a small car park and open, grassy area on the right while the road bore left and continued back towards the town centre. Footpaths and cycle paths led off the area.
The place itself seemed to have no name but was home to ducks, geese - and many chickens and cockerels which were sheltering under hedges. It was a bit more sheltered here anyway so, I donned a headscarf (to protect from TN and, this past day or so, arthritis in the joint of upper and lower jaw on the same side) and took some snaps…
On the way back, sheep and goats mixed happily in a field…
…and, at home, hyacinths have suddenly bloomed this past couple of days.
A pleasant morning with a change of scene and a breath of air and home before the rain arrived at 12.15.!
I have optimistically titled this No. 1 as we hope to discover other parts of the Wensum as it meanders through this part of Norfolk on its way to Norwich. Incidentally, Wensum comes from the old English word for winding and it certainly does that.
It's so often difficult to find the source of a river. The Welland just seems to start in a pond, or a soggy ditch, and nothing to mark it. The place you found looks a pleasant spot. I'm pleased you managed to escape the rain - I think it reached us a little earlier. Hope the painful jaw eases soon!
ReplyDeleteWith so little markings it's a wonder they can find the source! We were surprised to see so many chickens out in open public space. Many thanks, Alison.
