Laundries and Fountains - 1.

Easter 2015 - Sunday 5th April - and we are blessed with a dry, bright and sunny, warmer day.  The wind is still a little blustery but slight compared to the very high winds of late.

Thanks to the book Lavoirs et Fontaines de la Meuse by Francine D’Oliveira-Rezende with its superb collection of photos of Laundries and Fountains of the Meuse department of Lorraine, we decided to look at some of them more closely. Some we had noticed en route, others were unknown to us.

We started in our home-town of Damvillers and the fountain of the goddess which is a stone-throw from our front door.

Another fountain, a pump, is just a short walk from our house, and has the usual water trough (now filled with plants) and is situated on the pavement by the main road from Verdun to Montmédy.

Then a pleasant drive through the greening countryside to find others…

A back view of the laundry which shows the nearby chateau.

Such clear water!  Many of the river-fed ones are like this but the laundries with holes in the roof,  to collect rain water, contain very cloudy water as we discovered at...

So, to our last laundry destination where there was a mixture of both cloudy and clear water...

Delut is only a small village but its lavoir is impressive and contains much information including...

It was a most enjoyable outing, including a simple picnic lunch, and we look forward to more discoveries.
