Destroyed villages...1

In the Meuse department of the Lorraine region in north-eastern France, there are many villages which were destroyed in World War One following the German assault on February 21st 1916 which started The Battle of Verdun - the bloodiest of the battles in that “war to end all wars”.  Those of them that were unrecoverable have been left as memorials.  I leave the photos to tell their story…

Ornes

Some years after the war,  a small farm with adjoining houses was built on the opposite side of the Damloup road - the only evidence that Ornes is living today.

These are two of the villages we visited...the others to follow.

We intended to visit others but heavy rain set in so we headed for home.

We plan to visit other destroyed villages in the near future.

  1. There is much food for thought here. I was unaware of these villages and their fate until you brought it to my notice.
