The Green Cathedral

Behind a little chapel in countryside close by the village of Villecloye, there is an area called The Green Cathedral which is dedicated to Saint Ernelle.

The cathedral is not a building as one might expect, but an area of open ground under arched trees, a natural cathedral.

There is a source of water there which is said to have healing powers for sore eyes and skin.  The water is not drinkable so, presumably, is to be used externally.

It is a pretty and peaceful place which in itself is a balm to the mind and spirit.

  1. This looks a delightful place, and I had never heard of Sainte Ernelle. Lovely photos.

    1. Thanks, Alison. It is very pretty there. The name Ernelle was a new one on me. I understand it may have been a mix-up of Renelle.

    2. I googled - not a pleasant tale, but saints stories rarely are!

  2. What I find amazing is that this is still marked and remembered - since the year 680!
